"Earth/Energy/Editing" will be the theme of the 2009 AESE annual meeting, to be held in Houston, Texas, on October 29 through November 1. The icebreaker will be on October 29, technical sessions on October 30-31, and field trip on November 1.

The awards dinner, on October 31, will have a Halloween theme. Bring a costume or at least a mask for the costume contest. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.

Other events include a freelancers' breakfast, survey breakfast, and business luncheon.

Proposed topics for the technical sessions include geoscience education, database design and archival techniques, copyright issues, triage with high quality, freelance editing, digital versus print publishing, environmentally friendly printing, International Year of Planet Earth update, geology of Texas, guidelines for writing and maintaining style guides, and the future of AESE.

The deadline for abstracts for the technical program is September 1. If you would like to propose a topic, chair a session, give a talk, or participate in a panel discussion during the technical session, contact Nicole Barlow, AESE vice president, nicole@purplerockediting.com.

Houston, known as Space City and the Energy Capital of the World, is also a shopper's paradise. Topping the must-see-and-shop list is the Galleria, with more than two million square feet of stores, restaurants, and indoor ice rink. Host chairman Elsa Kapitan-White, kwhite1@sugar-land.oilfield.slb.com, reports that AESE is in negotiations with a hotel in the Galleria area.

The AESE meeting will begin on the afternoon of October 29, the day the main part of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists annual meeting ends, to make it easier for people to attend both events.

The meeting will take place at the DoubleTree Guest Suites Houston by the Galleria (http://doubletree1.hilton.com/en_US/dt/hotel/HOUSYDT-Doubletree-Guest-Suites-Houston-by-the-Galleria-Texas/index.do). The hotel has reserved a block of rooms for AESE at a conference rate of $129 per night.
