Web Search Portal
Notes:
- Checkboxes only apply to the Multi-Engine Search capability.
To search using one of the engines, simply click on its name.
- In "duel" windows mode, the first results are displayed in the
left or top window, depending on whether
side by side or tiered is selected,
respectively. Any subsequent results are then displayed in the right
or bottom window of the set of dual windows.
At any time, to have the results of the next search displayed in the
left or top window, click Reset before searching.
- "Duel" windows split the screen space defined by the
full window dimensions in pixels.
- For the equivalent of a spell checker on your search words,
Yahoo is the best engine.
- Only Alta Vista supports case sensitive search;
any upper case letter precludes a corresponding
lower case letter.
- Wildcards: Alta Vista and MSN Search allow "*"
after a minimum of three characters.
Alta Vista also allows multiple wildcards;
thus Sou*ha* finds Southampton.
- Alta Vista offers a translate option on hits.
You can use it with hits from any search engine.
- Some familiar search sites use engines from another vendor.
All the Web uses FAST; MSN Search uses Inktomi; and Yahoo uses Google.
- Preferences use a browser cookie.
Preferences not refreshed with a Save will expire in a month.
- The window close feature will lose track of any open popup windows if the
page is reloaded.
- For a single site search, use Google or Yahoo
while this notice appears.
-
This page displays best using a screen format of at least 800x600 pixels.
