Title: Science Editor

Description: This position is for an editor who has 3-plus years of combined experience in educational publishing or a related field. It is a hands-on line editing and rewrite position with limited mentoring responsibilities. Candidates must exhibit sophisticated written and oral language skills; have broad knowledge and understanding of grammar, usage, and mechanics; and be able to generate original copy, as necessary. Must have book, project-related and vendor-related experience. Will work autonomously and share some limited mentoring and supervisory duties. On a daily basis, will edit and rewrite manuscripts, generate and/or review art specs as necessary, guide and monitor outside vendors and in-house freelancers, and work with Production and Design to create high-quality pages and artwork that meet market demands. Will be responsible for the quality and integrity of their manuscripts and will follow each manuscript through all proof stages to the bound book stage and into reprint corrections. In order to achieve this candidate will be familiar with the state standards, state nuances, and state-specific test specs, as well as all TL guidelines and specifications.

Background: College degree and relevant experience necessary, teaching background appealing but not necessary.

Position

Publications Manager
Integrated Ocean Drilling Program
Texas A&M University

The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) at Texas A&M University has an opening for a qualified individual to oversee and manage delivery of all publication services for IODP handled by IODP/TAMU for the U.S. Implementing Organization (USIO) and the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program.

The person in this position is responsible for oversight of all activities associated with the timely production and dissemination of reports and publications; facilitation of scientific meetings; production of materials for scientific conferences (slide shows and posters); production of technical manuals; management of department-related Web site content; and production of public relations products.

The person in this position is also responsible for hiring and managing staff; oversight of department budget and subcontracts; completion of legacy documentation for the Ocean Drilling Program; participation in advisory panel and task force groups handling IODP publications issues; administration of IODP policy; interactions with university faculty; and participation on the IODP/USIO management team.

In support of these responsibilities, the person in this position must interact with USIO staff members who work in different geographic locations, international staff members involved in carrying out IODP operations and publications, and international scientists (editors, reviewers, authors).

Qualifications for the position are listed below.

Required qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in science, journalism, language, or a related field; or equivalent training and experience.
Eight years of experience in scientific publishing, or equivalent experience to include three years in a supervisory position, including experience with personnel management and three years in a management position, including experience with financial and programmatic development and management.
Experience in a service-oriented position.
Ability to obtain passport and international travel visas on a continuing basis.
Working knowledge of standard computer hardware and software applications.
Working knowledge of publishing and graphics software and computer-based electronic publishing techniques and tools.
Strong supervisory skills.
Excellent communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills.
Orientation to detail and ability to successfully organize tasks, multitask, and prioritize work.
Ability to work independently.
Demonstrated ability to work professionally, harmoniously, and cooperatively with others.

Preferred qualifications:
Master’s degree in science, journalism, language, or a related field.
Experience in development of book, Web, and CD publications.
Experience running a publications department or group of related scope.
Experience working collaboratively with international organizations or agencies.
Five years’ experience with computer-based electronic publication techniques and tools.
Familiarity with aspects of scientific ocean drilling.
Experience working on ODP and/or IODP publications.
Background in the oceanographic sciences.
